With its close proximity to Center City, Charlotte Douglas International Airport, major highways and the light rail, this pulsing, vibrant neighborhood is experiencing meteoric growth with young professionals. The Lynx Light Rail Blue Line has driven the latest housing boom in South End. Twelve projects with eight under construction are currently underway. Urban planners expect South End's population to double from 32,00 to 64,000 by 2015. Although Lynx makes the commute to uptown easy, core business sector jobs make for a true mixed-use neighborhood. South End is a center for creativity, innovation and design talent. Many of Charlotte’s advertising agencies and creative shops are centered here along with Charlotte’s to-the-trade interior design and architecture merchants. Restaurants, antique shops and retail stores, live music, food truck Fridays, monthly gallery crawl events and festivals like South End Soul (a five-day celebration of design, art and innovation) bring a fun, festive vibe to this area.
In 2004, Historic South End became part of Center City Partners. This Advisory Committee, comprised of stakeholders representing a wide range of interests, meets regularly to provide input regarding the planning, development, marketing and physical investments in South End.
